Mumbai on Top in Road Accidents
- Mumbai has got the dubious distinction of the city with maximum road accidents in the country.
- The number of deaths in road mishaps is highest in the Delhi in 2015.
- In 2015,there were about 5 lakh road accidents in the country,of which .46 lakh people were killed.
- On an average 17 lives were lost every hour in road accidents.
- This was according to the report road accidents in India in 2015.
UN Plans to End AIDS Threat by 2030
- The Member States of the United Nations have adopted a new political declaration that aims towards combating the worldwide scourge of HIV & AIDS.
- It aims to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
- A political declaration was adopted by the 193-nation General Assembly.
- There are still 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
India Says ‘No’ to Google Street View
- India has declined to give security clearance to the Internet giant’s Street View service.
- The permission was declined primarily due to objections raised by the Defence Ministry.
- The Street View service allows users to have a panoramic view of places in cities, as they would look in real life.
- The Internet giant uses cars and bikes fitted with cameras to collect 360-degree images of a place.
India Joins Europe Anti-Corruption Plan
- India has joined a group of nearly 40 nations that have signed a Europe-led clampdown on tax evasion & corruption.
- Signatories to the scheme to undertake to give one another free access to information on who ultimately owns companies.
- The initiative aims to develop a global standard for the automatic exchange of beneficial ownership data.
- Most European countries except Switzerland have joined.
Kuczynski Win Peru Presidential Election
- Peruvian economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski will be the next president of Peru.
- Kuczynski edged out his rival Keiko Fujimori with a wafer-thin margin winning by 50.117 per cent to 49.
- The difference in the total votes was of 41,438 with 8,580,474 votes for Kuczynski & 8,539,036 for Fujimori.
- He will take over as president on July 28 from President Ollanta Humala for a mandate lasting until 2021.
Russia Honours UN Secretary-General
- Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree awarding the Order of Friendship to United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
- He was awarded for strengthening peace, friendship & cooperation between peoples.
- Ban first took office as the UN chief on Jan. 1, 2007 & he was re-elected for another five-year term.
- The order was set up in 1994 & is awarded for outstanding accomplishments.
Chong Wei Retakes Top Spot in Badminton
- Malaysian shuttler Lee Chong Wei regained the world No.1 spot in men’s singles replacing Chinese Chen Long.
- India’s Kidambi Srikanth dropped a place to be 13th.
- In the women’s singles rankings, Indian ace Saina Nehwal & P.V. Sindhu were static at 8th &10th respectively.
- This was according to the latest rankings released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
IM Visakh Win Mayor’s chess Tournament
- Tamil Nadu teenager NR Visakh has clinched the Mumbai Mayor’s International Open Chess Tournament.
- Visakh thus became the first Indian to capture the title in its nine-year history.
- Visakh drew his final round match with GM Diptayan Ghosh & was tied for the top place on 8 points with Ghosh & Chandigarh’s Himal Gusain .
- The arbiters declared Visakh as the champion on a better tie-break.
BCCI Announces Six New Test Venues
- The BCCI has announced that Rajkot, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Dharamsala, Ranchi & Indore will debut as Test venues in India’s 2016-17 home season.
- It will include series against New Zealand, England, Australia & Bangladesh.
- In all India’s home season will include 13 Tests, eight ODIs and three T20 internationals
- The announcement was made after the BCCI’s Tour Programme & Fixtures Committee.
UGC Forms Pay Review Panel
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a 5 member committee for pay revision of academic staff of Universities & Colleges.
- The Pay Revision Committee will be chaired by UGC member Prof V S Chauhan
- The committee will submit its report in six months.
- The panel will also examine the present structure of emoluments & service conditions of university & college teachers & other staff.
