Mallya Declared Proclaimed Offender
- A special court in Mumbai has declared Vijay Mallya a proclaimed offender in a money laundering case following a petition by the Enforcement Directorate or ED.
- Under law, the court naming somebody a proclaimed offender requires the person to appear within 30 days of the date of publishing of the order.
- Failing which all his properties will be attached & sold by government.
Centre Orders Import of Pulses
- The Centre has ordered import of 12,500 tonnes of pulses for buffer stocks to ensure the availability of commodity at reasonable prices.
- Of this,10,000 tonnes will be Masur & 2,500 tonnes will be Urad.
- So far, over 14,000 tonnes of pulses have already been imported by the govt agencies against the total contracted of 38,500 tonnes.
- The gap in demand & supply of pulses has widened due to drought.
Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai Quits
- Delhi’s Transport Minister Gopal Rai has resigned from his post citing health reasons.
- He was accused of indulging in corrupt practices in implementing government’s app-based premium bus service scheme.
- Rai underwent a surgery & is currently undergoing physiotherapy.
- Delhi’s PWD & Health Minister Satyendra Jain has been asked to take charge of the Transport Department.
Apple Opens up Siri to Third-Party Apps
- Apple said it was opening up its Siri digital assistant to outside applications.
- The new feature will enable iPhone users to connect with non-Apple services to send messages, make payments & search photos.
- Siri is a computer program that works as an intelligent personal assistant.
- Siri lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings etc.
Russia Given Suspended Disqualification
- Russia have been handed a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 by Uefa following violent scenes at the game against England.
- The Russians have been fined €150,000 & told they will be kicked out if incidents of a similar nature happen.
- The suspended disqualification only to incidents that happened inside the stadium.
- England were also threatened with disqualification but not formally charged.
Xerox Name Ashok Vemuri, CEO of BPO Firm
- Xerox Corp has named Ashok Vemuri will become the chief executive of its business process outsourcing unit after the company splits into two entities.
- Xerox has announced plans to split its printer operations & its BPOunits into two companies.
- Vemuri has headed iGate Corp & will join Xerox effective July 1.
- The current CEO of Xerox Ursula Burns will become chairman once the transaction closes.
Suresh Chandra Appointed Law Secretary
- Senior legal service officer Suresh Chandra was appointed as Union Law Secretary.
- He is an officer of Indian Legal Service & currently Additional Secretary in the department.
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the appointment of Chandra as Secretary, Dept of Legal Affairs.
- G Narayana Raju, Legislative Secretary was holding additional charge of the post of Secretary, Legal Affairs.
Sridevi to Receive Award at IIFA
- Bollywood actress Sridevi to receive outstanding achievement award at International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) gala in Madrid held from June 23 to 26 .
- She has worked in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam & Kannada films.
- She made her Bollywood debut as a child artist with the 1975 movie “Julie”.
- In her career spanning over 40 years, she has given various memorable performances in films.
Famous Hindi Novelist Mudrarakshas Dies
- Famous Hindi novelist and critique Mudrarakshas has passed away.
- He was educated in Lucknow & had later worked as editor of Hindi journal Gyanodaya, published from Kolkata.
- He had also edited Hindi journal Anuvarta.
- His original name was Subhash Chandra & he wrote novels & other forms of Hindi prose besides producing literature for children with his pen name.
Ivory Coast Honours President Mukherjee
- President Pranab Mukherjee was awarded the highest national award of Ivory Coast, the ‘National Grand Crois’.
- The President also held bilateral talks with his Ivory Coast counterpart Alassane Ouattara.
- Both countries also signed Headquarters agreement for re-establishment of Exim bank regional head quarters in the Ivory Coast.
- President Mukherjee is on a three nation visit to Africa.
