Aditya Puri Named Best Banking CEO
- Aditya Puri, the chief executive & managing director of the HDFC Bank has been ranked as the best banking CEO in Asia by the investor community.
- The bank’s chief financial officer Sashi Jagdishan has been ranked as the best CFO.
- HDFC also ranked as the best IR company.
- The All-Asia Executive Team rankings 2016 had 1,394 investment professionals from 582 financial institutions participating in it.
Airtel-Aircel 4G Deal Cleared
- Telecom Ministry have cleared the Rs 3,500-crore 4G spectrum trading deal between service providers Bharti Airtel and Aircel.
- Airtel has entered into an agreement with Aircel to acquire rights to use 4G spectrum of Aircel in eight telecom circles for Rs 3,500 crore.
- These circles are Tamil Nadu, Bihar, J&K, West Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Andhra Pradesh & Odisha.
Paytm Launches Small Loans for Merchants
- Payments services firm Paytm has started offering collateral-free working capital loans for merchants on its platform.
- Paytm has partnered with financial institutions such as Capital Float which will offer loans to merchants.
- It will offer loan to merchants such has kirana stores, auto and taxi drivers based on their payments history.
- These loans would be in the range of Rs10,000 to Rs1 lakh.
G20 Pledges to Boost Global Trade
- The world’s top 20 economies agree to boost sluggish global trade despite growing protectionism & uncertainty over Brexit.
- This was decided at G20 trade ministers meeting in Shanghai,China.
- The Group of 20 trade ministers approved a broad trade growth strategy aimed at reversing a slowing in global trade.
- The G20 nartions account for 85 percent of global trade.
Portugal Win Euro 2016 football C’ship
- Portugal has lifted the Euro 2016 football championship at Saint-Denis in Paris
- Portugal defeated host France 1-0 in the final.
- Substitute Eder scored in extra-time to give Portugal a win at their first major international title.
- Eder scored the goal with 11 minutes of extra time left to stun France after the host team had dominated the match.
Andy Murray Clinches 2nd Wimbledon Title
- Britain’s Andy Murray has clinched a second Wimbledon title & third Grand Slam crown.
- He defeated Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4, 7-6 and 7-6..
- World number two Murray added the 2016 trophy to his 2013 triumph at the All England Club & his 2012 US Open title.
- He shattered Raonic’s hopes of becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam crown.
Heather & Henri Wins Mixed Doubles Title
- Britain’s Heather Watson & Henri Kontinen of Finland won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title.
- Watson is the first Briton to win the mixed doubles at Wimbledon.
- The unseeded Watson and Kontinen defeated 15th seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany & Colombian Roberto Farah 7-6, 6-4.
- Earlier Gordon Reid won the men’s wheelchair singles title & Jordanne Whiley the women’s wheelchair doubles.
Hamilton Wins Fourth British Grand Prix
- Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton from Great Britain has won the 2016 British Grand Prix title of Formula One
- This his overall fourth British Grand Prix title after winning it in 2008, 2014 and 2015.
- Red Bull Max Verstappen finished in 2nd & Nico Rosberg of Mercedes finished 3rd.
- British GP was the tenth race of the 2016 season & was held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire in England.
Veteran India Footballer Amal Dutta Dies
- Renowned Indian footballer Amal Dutta passed away.
- He was part of the India squad in the 1954 Asian Games
- He was known as India’s first professional coach, who introduced the diamond formation.
- He took over as the coach for East Bengal Club for a year in 1963 and later moved on to coach Mohun Bagan Club.
- He served as the technical director of Indian national team in late eighties.
11th-July: World Population Day
- World Population day is an annual event observed on July 11 every year.
- The event was established by the Governing Council of the UN Development Programme in 1989.
- It aims at increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty & maternal health.
- This year’s 2016 theme is Investing in teenage girls.
India Signs 5 Agreements with Tanzania
- PM Modi met Tanzanian President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli following which India & Tanzania signed 5 agreements.
- The two sides signed an agreement under which India will provide a Line of Credit of USD 92 million to Tanzania.
- Other include MoU on water resource, MoU for establishment of vocational training centre, MoU on visa waiver & an agreement between NSIC India & SIDO Tanzania.
2nd Unit of Kudankulam Gets Operational
- The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu gets operational.
- The atomic reactor will provide electricity to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala & Karnataka.
- At first 250 mega watt power will be generated and this will be increased step by step & will reach the full capacity of 1000 mega watt in 3 months.
- The Kudankulam nuclear reactors have been built with Russian expertise.
India Post to Deliver Gangajal
- The initiative to deliver pure Gangajal from post offices spread across the country was launched in Patna.
- Minister of state for Communications Manoj Sinha & Union Minister of Law & Justice Ravishankar Prasad launched the initiative.
- Under this scheme the pious Gangajal brought from Gangotri and Rishikesh would be delivered at the doorsteps of people at nominal prices.
PM Modi Arrives in Nairobi, Kenya
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kenya from Tanzania on the fourth and final leg of his four-nation African tour.
- He becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kenya after 35 years since the visit of then PM India Gandhi in 1981.
- PM Modi will meet the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta at the State House.
- Kenya is home to around 80,000 people of Indian origin.
Sanjay Gupta Appointed CMD of KRCL
- Sanjay Gupta has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD )of the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL).
- He was from the Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME) & worked as the Director from Sept30, 2013.
- He also worked as chief mechanical engineer of Konkan Railway.
- He had been officiating as the CMD since Nov 24, 2015, after the retirement of B P Tayal.
N Korea Threatens Action Against THAAD
- North Korea said that it will take physical response to a move by the US & South Korea to deploy THAAD missile defense system to the Korean peninsula.
- North Korea’s military said there will be physical response measures from them as soon.
- The US & South Korea have agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system to counter the threat from the North Korea.
Bangladesh Bans Zakir Naik’s Peace TV
- Bangladesh government have banned the broadcasting of India-based controversial preacher Zakir Naik’s Peace TV channel.
- It was banned after reports that his provocativespeeches had inspired some of the terrorists who carried out the terror attack at a cafe in Dhaka.
- The decision to ban was taken during a special meeting of Cabinet Committee on Law and Order.
Decisive Win for Abe-led Coalition
- Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling coalition has secured landslide victory in the elections to the Upper House of Parliament.
- They need a super majority in the upper house to start a parliamentary motion for changing the constitution.
- The current Constitution has never been revised. It took effect in 1947.
- Mr Abe said some of the articles need to be changed to fit the times.
Sushila Karki is Nepal’s 1st Woman CJ
- Justice Sushila Karki is the first woman Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court.
- The appointment of Sushila Karki was unanimously endorsed by a parliamentary panel.
- She was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the President’s Office.
- Karki was recommended for the top judicial post on April 10 this year by the Judicial Council.
NASA’s Mars Orbiter Spots CO2 Ice
- NASA’s Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter has found thin layer of carbon dioxide ice in some dusty parts of the Mars.
- The surface in these regions becomes so frigid overnight that an extremely thin layer of carbon dioxide frost appears to form.
- Carbon dioxide is the main ingredient of Mars’ atmosphere.
- The planet also has large reserves of frozen carbon dioxide buried in the polar ice caps.
