Aditya Puri Named Best Banking CEO

  1. Aditya Puri, the chief executive & managing director of the HDFC Bank has been ranked as the best banking CEO in Asia by the investor community.
  2. The bank’s chief financial officer Sashi Jagdishan has been ranked as the best CFO.
  3. HDFC also ranked as the best IR company.
  4. The All-Asia Executive Team rankings 2016 had 1,394 investment professionals from 582 financial institutions participating in it.

Airtel-Aircel 4G Deal Cleared

  1. Telecom Ministry have cleared the Rs 3,500-crore 4G spectrum trading deal between service providers Bharti Airtel and Aircel.
  2. Airtel has entered into an agreement with Aircel to acquire rights to use 4G spectrum of Aircel in eight telecom circles for Rs 3,500 crore.
  3. These circles are Tamil Nadu,  Bihar, J&K, West Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Andhra Pradesh & Odisha.

Paytm Launches Small Loans for Merchants

  1. Payments services firm Paytm has started offering collateral-free working capital loans for merchants on its platform.
  2. Paytm has partnered with financial institutions such as Capital Float which will offer loans to merchants.
  3. It will offer loan to merchants such has kirana stores, auto and taxi drivers based on their payments history.
  4. These loans would be in the range of Rs10,000 to Rs1 lakh.

G20 Pledges to Boost Global Trade

  1. The world’s top 20 economies agree to boost sluggish global trade despite growing protectionism & uncertainty over Brexit.
  2. This was decided at G20 trade ministers meeting in Shanghai,China.
  3. The Group of 20 trade ministers approved a broad trade growth strategy aimed at reversing a slowing in global trade.
  4. The G20 nartions account for 85 percent of global trade.

Portugal Win Euro 2016 football C’ship

  1. Portugal has lifted the Euro 2016 football championship at Saint-Denis in Paris
  2. Portugal defeated host France 1-0 in the final.
  3. Substitute Eder scored in extra-time to give Portugal a win at their first major international title.
  4. Eder scored the goal with 11 minutes of extra time left to stun France after the host team had dominated the match.

Andy Murray Clinches 2nd Wimbledon Title

  1. Britain’s Andy Murray has clinched a second Wimbledon title & third Grand Slam crown.
  2. He defeated Milos Raonic of Canada 6-4, 7-6 and 7-6..
  3. World number two Murray added the 2016 trophy to his 2013 triumph at the All England Club & his 2012 US Open title.
  4. He shattered Raonic’s hopes of becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam crown.

Heather & Henri Wins Mixed Doubles Title

  1. Britain’s Heather Watson & Henri Kontinen of Finland won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title.
  2. Watson is the first Briton to win the mixed doubles at Wimbledon.
  3. The unseeded Watson and Kontinen defeated 15th seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany & Colombian Roberto Farah 7-6, 6-4.
  4. Earlier Gordon Reid won the men’s wheelchair singles title & Jordanne Whiley the women’s wheelchair doubles.

Hamilton Wins Fourth British Grand Prix

  1. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton from Great Britain has won the 2016 British Grand Prix title of Formula One
  2. This his overall fourth British Grand Prix title after winning it in 2008, 2014 and 2015.
  3. Red Bull Max Verstappen finished in 2nd & Nico Rosberg of Mercedes finished 3rd
  4. British GP was the tenth race of the 2016 season & was held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire in England.

Veteran India Footballer Amal Dutta Dies

  1. Renowned Indian footballer Amal Dutta passed away.
  2. He was part of the India squad in the 1954 Asian Games
  3. He was known as India’s first professional coach, who introduced the diamond formation.
  4. He took over as the coach for East Bengal Club for a year in 1963 and later moved on to coach Mohun Bagan Club.
  5. He served as the technical director of Indian national team in late eighties.

11th-July: World Population Day

  1. World Population day is an annual event observed on July 11 every year.
  2. The event was established by the Governing Council of the UN Development Programme in 1989.
  3. It aims at increase people’s awareness on various population issues such as the importance of family planning, gender equality, poverty & maternal health.
  4. This year’s 2016 theme is Investing in teenage girls.

India Signs 5 Agreements with Tanzania

  1. PM Modi met Tanzanian President John Pombe Joseph Magufuli following which India & Tanzania signed 5 agreements.
  2. The two sides signed an agreement under which India will provide a Line of Credit of USD 92 million to Tanzania.
  3. Other include MoU on water resource, MoU for establishment of vocational training centre, MoU on visa waiver & an agreement between NSIC India & SIDO Tanzania.

2nd Unit of Kudankulam Gets Operational

  1. The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu gets operational.
  2. The atomic reactor will provide electricity to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala & Karnataka.
  3. At first 250 mega watt power will be generated and this will be increased step by step & will reach the full capacity of 1000 mega watt in 3 months.
  4. The Kudankulam nuclear reactors have been built with Russian expertise.

India Post to Deliver Gangajal

  1. The initiative to deliver pure Gangajal from post offices spread across the country was launched in Patna.
  2. Minister of state for Communications Manoj Sinha & Union Minister of Law & Justice Ravishankar Prasad launched the initiative.
  3. Under this scheme the pious Gangajal brought from Gangotri and Rishikesh would be delivered at the doorsteps of people at nominal prices.

PM Modi Arrives in Nairobi, Kenya

  1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kenya from Tanzania on the fourth and final leg of his four-nation African tour.
  2. He becomes the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Kenya after 35 years since the visit of then PM India Gandhi in 1981.
  3. PM Modi will meet the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta at the State House.
  4. Kenya is home to around 80,000 people of Indian origin.

Sanjay Gupta Appointed CMD of KRCL

  1. Sanjay Gupta has been appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD )of the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL).
  2. He was from the Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME) & worked as the Director from Sept30, 2013.
  3. He also worked as chief mechanical engineer of Konkan Railway.
  4. He had been officiating as the CMD since Nov 24, 2015, after the retirement of B P Tayal.

N Korea Threatens Action Against THAAD

  1. North Korea said that it will take physical response to a move by the US & South Korea to deploy THAAD missile defense system to the Korean peninsula.
  2. North Korea’s military said there will be physical response measures from them as soon.
  3. The US & South Korea have agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system to counter the threat from the North Korea.

Bangladesh Bans Zakir Naik’s Peace TV

  1. Bangladesh government have banned the broadcasting of India-based controversial preacher Zakir Naik’s Peace TV channel.
  2. It was banned after reports that his provocativespeeches had  inspired some of the terrorists who carried out the terror attack at a cafe in Dhaka.
  3. The decision to ban was taken during a special meeting of Cabinet Committee on Law and Order.

Decisive Win for Abe-led Coalition

  1. Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling coalition has secured landslide victory in the elections to the Upper House of Parliament.
  2. They need a super majority in the upper house to start a parliamentary motion for changing the constitution.
  3. The current Constitution has never been revised. It took effect in 1947.
  4. Mr Abe said some of the articles need to be changed to fit the times.

Sushila Karki is Nepal’s 1st Woman CJ

  1. Justice Sushila Karki is the first woman Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court.
  2. The appointment of Sushila Karki was unanimously endorsed by a parliamentary panel.
  3. She was administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the President’s Office.
  4. Karki was recommended for the top judicial post on April 10 this year by the Judicial Council.

NASA’s Mars Orbiter Spots CO2 Ice

  1. NASA’s Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter has found thin layer of carbon dioxide ice in some dusty parts of the  Mars.
  2. The surface in these regions becomes so frigid overnight that an extremely thin layer of carbon dioxide frost appears to form.
  3. Carbon dioxide is the main ingredient of Mars’ atmosphere.
  4. The planet also has large reserves of frozen carbon dioxide buried in the polar ice caps.
