Paes,Hingis Win Mixed Doubles Title
- Leander Paes & Martina Hingis defeated Sania Mirza & Ivan Dodig to won the French Open mixed doubles final at Roland Garros.
- The unseeded Indo-Swiss pair eked out a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win over the second seeds in a match.
- It was Paes 10th mixed doubles title & 18th Grand Slam title overall.
- It was Hingis Grand Slam title number 22nd & her fifth trophy in mixed doubles.
India Ranks 70th on Good Country Index
- India is the world’s 70th good country to live in amongst 163 other nations.
- The top three best countries included Sweden,Denmark & the Netherlands whereas Libya was ranked as the least good country in the world.
- This was according the ‘Good Country’ 2015 index.
- The Index attempts to define a good country as the one that serves the interest of its people & contributes to the good of the humanity
Nita Ambani Nominated to IOC
- Nita Ambani was nominated as a candidate to be a new International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.
- She becomes the first Indian woman to be nominated to the IOC.
- The election will be conducted at the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro between August 2-4.
- Mrs Ambani has been working in the field education & sports for a long time.
- The IOC is the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement
Int Day of Children Victim of Aggression
- The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression is observed on June 4 each year.
- The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental & emotional abuse.
- It was established on 19 August 1982.
- This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect rights of children.
Sreeramakrishnan Elected Kerala Speaker
- P Sreeramakrishnan of the CPI (M) was elected Speaker of the Kerala Assembly.
- Sreeramakrishnan got 92 votes while the opposition UDF candidate V. P. Sajeendran got 46 votes.
- The House was dissolved after the election of Speaker & will reassemble on the 24th.
- Sreeramakrishnan has been elected to the Assembly for the second term from Ponnani in Malappuram district.
HAL-Built HTT-40 First Flight Successful
- The indigenous built Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40 (HTT-40), a basic trainer aircraft took to the skies for the first time & completed a basic flight without glitches.
- HTT-40 was piloted by Group Capt Subramaniam (Retd).
- The aircraft is aimed at being used for the first stage training for all flying cadets .
- The HTT-40 is a propeller-driven, turbo-prop aircraft for Stage-1 training of pilots
India,Singapore Hold Defence Dialogue
- India & Singapore held the inaugural Singapore-India Defence Ministers’ Dialogue.
- It was co-chaired by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar & his Singapore counterpart Dr. Ng Eng Hen.
- The dialogue was aimed at raising of bilateral defence cooperation to the highest level.
- Singapore & India enjoy regular defence interactions in multiple areas, including defence policy dialogues &military exchanges.
Assam Passes Ease of Doing Business Bill
- Assam Assembly has passed the Assam Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2016.
- The bill has the provision for speedy processing of applications and issue of clearances for setting up industries.
- The basic aim of the bill is to create an investment-friendly environment for economic development of the state.
- The bill provides for establishing a bureau under the name of Assam Bureau of Investment Promotion.
France Declares Flood Emergency
- France has declared flood emergency after the River Seine in Paris burst its banks in some places displacing thousands of people.
- French President Francois Hollande has declared the region around Paris a natural disaster area.
- Paris police has upgraded their flood warning to orange – the second-highest level for areas near the Seine.
- The River Seine is at its highest level in more than 30 years.
Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Passes Away
- Boxing legend Muhammad Ali has passed away.
- He was the three-time former world champion & among the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport.
- He had suffered for 35 years with Parkinson’s disease.
- He was honoured with the task of lighting the flame at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
- He had received the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2005.
PM Modi Leaves on a Five-Nation Tour
- PM Modi has left on a 5 nation visit to Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland,the US & Mexico.
- The PM will first travel to Afghanistan where he will inaugurate the Afghan-India Friendship Dam.
- From Afghanistan, he will proceed to Qatar & then to Switzerland where black money is likely to be on the agenda.
- In the US,PM Modi will meet President Obama & also address a joint meeting of the US Congress.
