20th June: World Refugee Day

  1. The United Nations’ (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year.
  2. This event honors the courage, strength and determination of women, men & children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict& violence.
  3. The United Nations Assembly decided that June 20 would be celebrated as World Refugee Day from 2001 onwards.
  4. The theme 2016 is #WithRefugees.

FM Lays Foundation Stone of IIM-Amritsar

  1. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has laid the foundation stone for a new campus of IIM-Amritsar.
  2. This would be the own campus of IIM-Amritsar, the 15th Indian Institute of Management in the country.
  3. The new campus of IIM-Amritsar will be built on a 60-acre land in Manawala on the National Highway-1.
  4. IIM Calcutta was the first IIM to be set up in November 1961.

SIB Launch Remit2India Service

  1. South Indian Bank has announced the launch of its Remit2India service.
  2. It is a secure online money transfer service for NRIs.
  3. The new arrangement facilitates faster, cost-effective remittance from the US to SIB accounts in India.
  4. Currently, South Indian Bank’s facility is available for remittances from Europe, Australia, the UAE & Singapore.

Prominent Educationalist Jeppiaar Dies

  1. Renowned politician-turned-educationalist Jeppiaar has passed away.
  2. He started his career as a politician and later turned as an Educationist & Industrialist.
  3. He is the founder and Chairman of Jeppiaar Educational Trust & Founder & Chancellor of the Sathyabama University.
  4. He also successfully produced seven Tamil movies & directed one movie in Tamil.

Rosberg Won F1 Grand Prix of Europe

  1. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg of Germany has won the European Grand Prix Formula 1 championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  2. The Mercedes driver overcame Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany in the final race.
  3. The European Grand Prix is also known as the Grand Prix of Europe and was held regularly from 1999 until 2012.
  4. In 2016, the race returned, being run on a street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Indian Wins Silver at Archery World Cup

  1. The Indian mixed recurve team, comprising Deepika Kumari & Atanu Das has won silver at the Archery World Cup in Antalya.
  2. Indian team lost to South Korea 1-5 in the final.
  3. Indian team trailed 0-2 in the first set against the top-seed Korean pair of Choi Misun & Ku Bonchan & went down 1-5 in the final.
  4. The Indian duo reached final after beating Mauro Nespoli & Guendalina Sartori.

Thithi Bag Awards at Shanghai Film Fest

  1. Kannada film Thithi has bagged the top awards at the ongoing 19th Shanghai International Film Festival.
  2. Thithi won the Best Film & Best Script Writers in the Asia New Talent Awards at the festival in Shanghai.
  3. Thithi is a light-hearted story about three generations of men reacting to the death of the family’s 101-yr-old patriarch.
  4. The film’s cast were non-professional actors from Indian villages.

Oxygen Detected in Most Distant Galaxy

  1. Scientists have detected the presence of oxygen in a distant galaxy from Earth.
  2. The ancient galaxy SXDF-NB1006-2 sits roughly 13.1 billion light yrs from Earth.
  3. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, astronomers have detected glowing oxygen in a distant galaxy.
  4. The discovery is the clear signal of oxygen in the Universe that scientists have ever detected.

ICC Bans Shaminda Eranga from Bowling

  1. International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Sri Lanka fast bowler Shaminda Eranga from bowling for illegal action.
  2. He was reported for his action after the second Test against England.
  3. The assessment revealed that all deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.
  4. He can apply for a re-assessment after modifying his action.

SBI in ‘Hall of Shame’ of Banks

  1. SBI has been named in a ‘Hall of Shame’ list of 158 banking & financial institutions globally that have invested billions of dollars in companies making cluster bombs.
  2. The list includes global giants like JP Morgan,Barclays & Credit Suisse that invested over USD 28 billion in seven producers of cluster munitions between June 2012 & April 2016.
  3. The maximum number of 74 banks are from the US.
