Mamata Banerjee Sworn in West Bengal CM
- Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as the chief minister of West Bengal for the second consecutive time.
- She was administered oath of office and secrecy by state governor Keshri Nath Tripathi.
- She first took over as chief minister on May 20, 2011.
- In the recent concluded assembly elections, Banerjee led the Trinamool to a landslide victory, with the party winning 211 seats.
CBEC Notifies 0.5 pct Krishi Kalyan Cess
- The Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) has notified 0.5 percent Krishi Kalyan cess will come into force from June 1.
- The service tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.
- With imposition of Krishi Kalyan Cess the total incidence of Service Tax will go up to 15 %.
- It is aimed at financing & promoting initiatives to improve agriculture.
Sonia Win Silver In World Boxing C’ships
- Indian boxer Sonia Lather has settled for a silver medal at the AIBA Women’s World Championships in 57 kg category in Astana, Kazakhstan.
- Sonia Lather earned a silver medal after losing the summit clash to Italian Alessia Mesiano.
- India’s last gold at the prestigious tournament came in 2010 when M C Mary Kom had finished on top.
- In the 2014 edition in South Korea, India had won two silver medals.
Obama Visit Hiroshima Bomb Site
- Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit the site of the world’s first atomic bomb attack.
- During the visit, Obama & PM Shinzo Abe laid wreaths at a cenotaph dedicated to bombing victims & toured the peace park.
- The cenotaph includes the names of all victims of the Hiroshima bombing.
- An estimated 140,000 people were killed in the world’s first atomic bombing at Hiroshima.
FinMin Eases Reporting Rules for FATCA
- The finance ministry has made it easier for Indian financial institutions to comply with the reporting requirements under the financial information exchange pact (Fatca) with the US.
- The ministry did away with the requirement of TIN (Tax Identification Number) number.
- FATCA requires foreign financial institutions to report information about financial accounts held by US taxpayers.
Centre to set up NIMZ in Orissa
- The Central govt. has given final approval for setting up of National Investment & Manufacturing Zone (NIMZ) in Kalinganagar,Odisha.
- A total of Rs 4,241 crore will be invested in the proposed NIMZ at Kalinga Nagar.
- The first phase of the project will be completed by 2020.
- The proposed project would be a mega industrial zone having a world-class township to cater to the needs of the investors.
BrahMos Missile Successfully Test-Fired
- India has successfully test fired the over 290-km range BrahMos land-attack supersonic cruise missile.
- The system was put to check by the Indian Air Force, which has acquired a squadron of it.
- The flight conducted has met its mission parameters in a copybook manner.
- The BrahMos can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land.
- It is a joint venture between the Russia & India.
Sadhguru to Lead Yoga Session at UN
- Spiritual leader & Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev will lead a yoga session at the UN on the occasion of the 2nd International Yoga Day.
- He will lead the yoga session at the international yoga day in the premises of the UN headquarters.
- The International Yoga Day will be commemorated on June 21.
- This year’s focus will be on the theme of Yoga for the Sustainable Development Goals.
Arunachal Reserve Win Biodiversity Award
- Pakke Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh has received the India Biodiversity Award 2016.
- The Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme of Reserve was awarded the prize under the category conservation of threatened species.
- It has been a major step towards conservation of four hornbill species.
- Under this programme urban citizens contribute money to protect hornbill nests.
HDFC Among Top10 Financial Services Firm
- HDFC Ltd has been ranked among the world’s ten biggest and most powerful companies in the consumer financial services sector on a Forbes list.
- The list was topped by global major American Express.
- HDFC ranked 7 th and is the only Indian company in top-ten in this category.
- In the overall list of the world’s 2,000 largest public companies compiled by Forbes, HDFC is ranked 404th.
