Cyclone Roanu Batters Bangladesh
- Tropical Cyclone Roanu lashed the coast of Bangladesh with heavy winds & sheets of rain
- Authorities in low-lying Bangladesh have relocated about 500,000 people into 3,500 shelters.
- Several areas were inundated by a storm surge of 3-4 foot above normal tide height.
- Ports have been closed and power lines are down across the country.
- Bangladesh is frequently battered by such storms.
Deadly Mount Sinabung Volcano Erupts
- A volcano has erupted on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, engulfing villages in ash.
- Mount Sinabung spewed hot gas, ash & rocks 2km into the air in a series of eruptions.
- Sinabung has erupted several times since 2010,causing the evacuation of many thousands of people and killing over a dozen.
- Before 2010,Sinabung had not erupted in 400 years.
- It is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
Himachal Pradesh Govt launches PEHAL
- Himachal Pradesh CM Virbhadra Singh has launched ‘PEHAL’.
- It is a vision document of the Shimla District administration for raising education standards.
- The five areas identified under PEHAL are Primary Education, Forest Rights, Health,Campaign against drugs & skill development.
- The programme is also an attempt to integrate the various stakeholders in the development story of the district.
Anurag Thakur Elected BCCI President
- Anurag Thakur was unanimously elected as the new Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) President at BCCI’s Special General Meeting in Mumbai.
- He replaces Shashank Manohar in the most high-profile post in Indian cricket administration.
- His tenure as BCCI President will extend till 2017.
- He began his career as cricket administrator as the president of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association.
Colour-Coded Aadhaar for Disabled Soon
- Disabled will soon get a colour-coded unique identity card as a legal document.
- The social justice ministry is all set to launch the process for registration of disabled persons to issue Unique Disabled Identity (UDID) cards.
- The card will be marked by red, blue and yellow to indicate the degree of disability.
- First UDID cards are likely to be delivered in August in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh.
Fecal Incontinence System Qora Launched
- The fecal incontinence management system Qora was launched by Minister of State for Science & Technology Shri Y.S.Chowdary.
- It is aimed to train the next generation of medical technology innovators in India to develop innovative & affordable medical devices to augment unmet clinical needs of India.
- Fecal incontinence is a medical condition marked by inability to control one’s bowel movements.
World’s Oldest Olympic Champion Die
- The oldest living Olympic champion Sandor Tarics has passed away.
- He was a member of Hungary’s gold-medal winning waterpolo team at the 1936 Games.
- He was recipient of official honours in both US and Hungary,
- He also served for a period as the United Nation’s earthquake advisor.
- After the death in 2011 of Italian cyclist Attilio Pavesi, Tarics became the oldest living Olympic champion.
Mohun Bagan Wins 14th Fed Cup Title
- Mohun Bagan has clinched the Federation Cup title for the 14th time.
- In the final played, they defeated Aizawl FC 5-0 to win the tournament after a gap of 8 years.
- The last time Bagan had won the title was in 2008, when it beat Dempo 1-0 at home.
- Aizawl FC had defeated Bengaluru FC in the quarterfinals before book a place in the Final for the first time.
Watal Appointed as Niti Aayog’s Adviser
- Former Finance Secretary, Ratan P Watal has been appointed as the Principle Adviser for social sector in Niti Aayog.
- He has been appointed to the post for three years.
- The new appointment for Watal comes a fortnight after his two-month extended tenure ended in April
- Watal, a retired IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, had been Finance Secretary between August last year and April this year.
China Wins Uber Cup Badminton Final
- China defeated South Korea 3-1 to win the Uber Cup badminton final.
- It was the 3rd time in the last four years the two countries have met in the final.
- China has won 14 in total since the team first started competing in the tournament in 1984.
- The Uber Cup is a major badminton competition contested by women’s badminton teams.
- It is named after a former British women’s badminton player Betty Uber.
