Novak Djokovic Win French Open Title
- World number 1 Novak Djokovic defeated Britain’s Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to win his first French Open title.
- Djokovic won his 12th major title and became the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four Grand Slams at once.
- He becomes only the eighth man in history to have won all four of the sport’s major singles titles.
- Murray was Britain’s first male finalist in Paris since 1937.
India 1st Mr. Universe Manohar Aich Dies
- India’s first Mr. Universe Manohar Aich has passed away.
- He took up bodybuilding & made this his passion during his stint at the Royal Air Force under British colonial rulers.
- He had become India’s first Mr. Universe when he won the 1952 National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association Universe Championships.
- He was known as ‘Pocket Hercules’ for his short stature.
Judoka Avtar Singh Qualifies for Rio
- Top Indian judoka Avtar Singh has qualified for the Rio Olympic Games in under 90kg weight category.
- Avtar has qualified for the Rio Olympic under the continental quota.
- Avtar hails from Gurdaspur in Punjab, & is presently working in Punjab Armed Police.
- He has won a gold in South Asian Games held in Shillong in February.
- He also won gold medals in Senior National Judo Championships in 2014-15.
World Environment Day Observed
- World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on June 5.
- The day is observed to raise global awareness to take positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth.
- This year United Nations calls for a worldwide campaign to take a strong action to curb the illegal trade of wildlife that is threatening the biodiversity.
- WED theme 2016 is “Go Wild for Life”.
India & Qatar Sign 7 key Agreements
- India & Qatar have signed 7 agreements, including one on finance intelligence & terrorism financing & another to woo foreign investment
- Cooperation & investment in areas of skill development & education,health, tourism & sports were the other agreements.
- The agreements were signed by Indian & Qatar officials in the presence of PM Modi & Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.
Swiss Voters Rejects Basic Income Plan
- Swiss voters have rejected by a wide margin a proposal to provide a universal basic income grant to all citizens, according to official results.
- Final results from referendum showed that 76.9 % said “No” to the plan, with only 23% backing it.
- The amount to be paid was not determined before the vote.
- Switzerland was the first country to vote on such a universal basic income plan.
HP First State to Have State Data Centre
- Himachal Pradesh became the first state in the country to have a State Data Centre (SDC).
- It will offer 101 people-oriented services online through an integrated database.
- SDC would integrate the websites of various departments.
- It is first SDC in the country which has been designed using green data centre concept to minimise power requirement & increase power utilisation efficiency.
Gujarat Unveils New Policy to Boost IT
- The Gujarat govt has announced its first ever IT & Electronics Start-up Policy.
- The policy has special focus on encouraging new ventures by providing them incentives.
- Under the policy,the state govt would develop 50 incubators and mentor 2,000 start-ups in the next five year.
- The Gujarat govt will provide 50% capital investment assistance,in the limit of Rs 50 lakh, for setting up an incubator.
Mirza Named for Swachh Saathi Programme
- Bollywood actress Dia Mirza has been named the ambassador for Swachh Bharat Mission’s youth-based ‘Swachh Saathi’ programme.
- Under the Swachh Saathi more than 2,000 interns would be enrolled, who would coordinate with around 10,000 schools & ensure that all students in these schools take the pledge for Clean India.
- Dia is a youth icon & has been an active campaigner for Swachh Bharat.
Nitish Launches Grievances Redressal Act
- Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has launched the Bihar Public Grievance Redressal Act.
- The Act has empowered people to get their grievances redressed within specific time.
- If the grievance cannot be redressed, then the complainant will get a letter citing reasons for not getting the grievance redressed.
- The complainant can file an appeal if he/she is not satisfied with the answer.
