Rahman Conferred with Fukuoka Prize 2016

  1. Indian music composer A.R. Rahman was awarded Japan’s Fukuoka prize 2016.
  2. He was conferred with the award for his outstanding contribution towards creating & showcasing South Asian traditional fusion music.
  3. The Fukuoka Prize is an award established by the city of Fukuoka & the Yokatopia Foundation.
  4. It honours the outstanding work of individuals or organizations in preserving Asian culture.

India Among 10 Rich Countries

  1. India has been ranked among the 10 wealthiest countries globally with total individual wealth of $5,200 billion.
  2. India has been ranked 7th in the list of top 10 wealthiest countries.
  3. India makes the W10 (10 wealthiest) due to its large population.
  4. The list was topped by the US with total individual wealth of $48,700 billion.
  5. This was according to the report by New World Wealth.

Indian Economy Grows at 7.6% in 2015-16

  1. The Indian economy expanded by 7.6 % in 2015-16 to log the fastest growth among larger countries.
  2. In the last quarter of the fiscal year under review India’s gross domestic product (GDP) was 7.9%.
  3. As per data the country’s GDP in actual numbers & in real terms was Rs 113.50 lakh crore in 2015-16,against Rs105.52 lakh crore in the year before.
  4. The real per capita income also rose to Rs 77,435.

India, WB Sign Agreement of $9.2 mn

  1. India has signed a $9.2-million grant agreement with the World Bank for the Efficient & Sustainable City Bus Service Project.
  2. It aimed at improving the efficiency of the transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  3. The total cost of the programme is $113 million, out of which $9.2 million will be funded by WB & rest $103.07 million will be funded by the Centre, state & city governments.

India Tops Global Slavery Index

  1. India has the highest number of people in the world trapped in modern slavery .
  2. India has total of 18.35 million victims of forced labour, ranging from prostitution& begging.
  3. Behind India was China, Pakistan, Bangladesh & Uzbekistan .
  4. According to the 2016 Global Slavery Index released an estimated 45.8 million people are subject to some form of slavery compared to 35.8 million in 2014.

CEAT Cricket Awards 2016 Presented

  1. Star India batsman Virat Kohli was named CEAT T20 Player of the Year.
  2. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
  3. England batsman Joe Root was named as the Ceat International Cricketer of the Year & International Batsman of the Year.
  4. R Ashwin won the CEAT International Bowler of the Year.
  5. Rohit Sharma was named as the Indian Cricketer of the Year.

Sandhu Create History with Stabaek Debut

  1. Indian team goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Indian to feature in a top-tier league match in Europe,by turning out for Norwegian side Stabaek FC.
  2. He achieved the feet as he was named in Stabaek’s starting line-up for their Tippeligaen game against Start.
  3. He signed for Stabaek FC in 2014 but did not play in the Tippeligaen till Sunday.

Govt Doctors’ Retirement Age Extended

  1. PM Modi has approved the proposal of extending the retirement age of all doctors of the Central Health Service to 65 years.
  2. As of now, in govt. hospitals,the retirement age of doctors is 60 yrs in some states, 62 in some others.
  3. The proposal made by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare will be effective from May 31, 2016.
  4. This will enable the govt to retain experienced doctors for a longer period.

World No Tobacco Day Observed

  1. World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the world every year on May 31.
  2. People, non-governmental organizations & govt’s come together on this day to draw attention to the health problems that tobacco use can cause.
  3. The theme 2016 is: Get ready for plain packaging.
  4. Plain packaging is a measure to prohibit the use of logos, colors, brand images or promotional information on tobacco packaging.

Pope Honors Clooney, Gere & Salma Hayek

  1. Pope Francis honoured Hollywood actors Richard Gere, George Clooney & Salma Hayek with the Olive Medal of Peace to promote the Scholas Occurrentes foundation.
  2. They have agreed to work as ambassadors for the foundation’s art projects.
  3. Scholas Occurrentes is a foundation that links 400,000 schools & educational networks from various cultures & religions in 82 countries.
