Nehwal Wins Australian Open Super Series
- Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has lifted the Australian Open Super Series Badminton tournament title.
- In the final match played at Sydney, Saina defeated Chinese Sun Yu.
- In the first set the Chinese took lead 11-21 & Saina took the second set 21-14 & third was won by Saina 21-19.
- In the men’s singles final, Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus defeated Jeon Hyeok Jin of South Korea
CM Dedicates Sub-Sea Power Cable Project
- Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel has inaugurated the Rs 18.35-crore project to supply grid power to the island through marine cables.
- Shiyal Bet, an island located off Pipavav port in Amreli district, has got electricity for the first time since Independence.
- The entire village with over 800 households was lit up.
- The 6.4 km long under-sea marine cable was laid by Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited.
Censor Board Clears ‘Udta Punjab’
- The censor board has cleared the controversial drug-themed Bollywood film ‘Udta Punjab’ with 13 cuts under the ‘A’ category.
- It has unanimously cleared it after the proposed 13 cuts.
- The movie deals with the problem of drug addiction among youth in Punjab.
- The Abhishek Chaubey directed film is tentatively scheduled for release on June 17.
Lewis Hamilton Wins Canada Grand Prix
- Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix after a tense strategic battle with Sebastian Vettel.
- Hamilton took the chequered flag five seconds ahead of Vettel.
- Finland’s Valtteri Bottas finished third while Rosberg finished fifth, behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in fourth.
- The Canadian Grand Prix is an annual auto race held in Canada since 1961.
Theatre Pioneer Achyut Lahkar Dies
- Achyut Lahkar, doyen of Assam’s mobile theatre movement, noted playwright and actor has passed away.
- He founded Nataraj Theatre, the first mobile theatre company of Assam in 1963.
- He brought in several innovations into mobile theatre, including experimentation with three stages.
- He was honoured with the Kamal Kumari National Award in 1997 for his immense contribution to the field of culture.
AAI Wins Award for Solar Power Projects
- The Airports Authority of India has been conferred the National Award for Best Performing Central PSU for Roof Top Solar Power initiatives.
- The award was received by Shri A.K.Misra, ED on behalf of AAI.
- It has installed 4.8 megawatt peak power (MWp) rooftop solar plants at 13 airports.
- The solar energy generation so far is 51 Lakhs units from the completed solar power plants at various airports.
Scientists Turn CO2 into Rock
- Scientists have turned carbon dioxide into stone in a matter of months by pumping it deep underground & turning it into stone.
- The experiment in Iceland mixed CO2 emissions with water & pumped it hundreds of metres underground into volcanic basalt rock.
- This method of turning CO2 into stone is cheaper & more secure.
- Basalt makes up most of the world’s seafloors & approx 10% of continental rocks.
Tata Acquires Welspun Renewable Assets
- Tata Power Company has signed an agreement with Welspun Energy Pvt Ltd to acquire its green energy portfolio for an estimated at Rs 10,000 crore.
- The agreement to buy Welspun Renewable Energy’s 1.1GW renewable portfolio would be the largest solar M&A in the country.
- The company has about 1,140 mw of renewable power projects which includes 990 mw solar power & about 150 mw of wind power projects.
China Launches 23rd BeiDou Satellite
- China has successfully launched a satellite to support its global navigation and positioning network.
- The satellite was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre & was taken into orbit by a Long March-3C carrier rocket.
- It is the 23rd satellite in the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System and is being developed as an alternative to US GPS.
- It was the 229th launch of the March carrier rocket.
NFSD Centre Set up in Dehradun
- A National Forest Skill Development Centre has been set up in Dehradun to equip youths for jobs in the forest sector.
- It will help mitigate the problem of migration of people from the hills in search of work.
- It is one of a kind institution in the whole country where youth from all over India can get skill development training.
- It will help them get employment in the forest sector.
